You’ll always encounter an interesting meeting and exchange of cultural views – like a friendly debate on what the fair value of currency exchange should be! Generally people are just curious to explore what might be shared. Just like the ancient Silk Road trading traditions.
The Silk Road
2000 years / 4000 miles linking east to west; a network of interwoven trade, travel, commerce and lifestyles.
China’s Han Dynasty opened the Silk trade routes across Central Asia, eventually linking with like minded explorers and merchants from the west. ‘Sound familiar’! ?
Motoexplorers UK-Europe-Central Asia, China: In reality, little has changed from those basic principles of trade, cultural exchange and the natural human desire to remain inquisitive of far away places, sharing various faiths, values and exchanges of goods and technology – it’s always followed similar paths.

Generally everyone is just trying to go about their everyday lives, seeking their own security, comfort, companionship, livelihood and discovery. My experience in all parts of the world is that local people are almost always curious and welcoming of strangers from other lands. It’s a basic principle that’s a good foundation to build from.

a passing glance, taken so close and intimately I’m almost in the truck cab with them, guess it took them a little by surprise seeing a westerner suddenly curios about their personal little cabin space. Think it made them smile, a multi-cultural, multi-generation connection,
Reality – just as it’s discovered, no real agenda, just the rawness taken as it is. No real time spent concerning about technicals or how it might look.
Very simple! it can be anything, skewed perspectives, a basic camera, non conventional, even shooting stills way to close with a simple fish eye lens that’s made in China and meant for basic filming. I don’t mind what-ever the format or camera setting is, no concern of 1/3rds, sharp or blurry, resolution wasn’t even a consideration, it just was what it was. I think when you’re un-hindered by any technicals, people also feel quite relaxed.
It’s helpful if you’ve arrived there in a way that people can relate to. Motorcycles, or simple overland vehicles can help with that aspect, people see you’re also subjected to similar everyday survival challenges, the same as themselves. Basic kit can also be helpful, far less intrusive than a fancy camera+lens, just taking quick photographs, abstract positions, perhaps some strange location, or an up close interest in peoples ordinary activities, it shows curiosity and engagement, I think people understand, if you’re genuinely interested in what they’re doing.
